At Hidroxa, our mission is to provide comfort and relief to those affected by hyperhidrosis by allowing them easy access to other effective treatments. In recent years, we have established successful collaborations with clinics and hospitals, mainly in Scandinavia, where they use our machine to help their patients.
About Iontophoresis treatment
What is iontophoresis?
Iontophoresis machines are one of the most efficient ways to treat hyperhidrosis. For decades, people have used tap water iontophoresis to treat hyperhidrosis. When used correctly, this method offers outstanding results.
Generally, iontophoresis is a safe procedure, especially when you compare it to other hyperhidrosis treatments, such as anticholinergic medicine or endoscopic thoracic surgery. It is a painless and effective treatment that can be used to reduce excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the hands, feet, and armpits. This treatment is often recommended to people who have tried prescription antiperspirants but without success and need a more effective treatment.
Iontophoresis was first introduced in 1952, and it's a proven method for managing palmoplantar and axillary hyperhidrosis with minimal side effects. Excessive dryness or mild skin irritation are the most common complaints. However, this can be easily solved by applying moisturizer to the skin after each session.
How does it work?
During iontophoresis treatment, a medical device is used to pass a mild electrical current through the water and through the skin’s surface while your affected body part is submerged in water. (Or when treating the armpits, wet electrodes are placed in each armpit). The current is individually adjustable and thus offers flexible, comfortable treatments. Patients may experience a mild tingling sensation on the skin, but it shouldn’t cause any pain.
Our iontophoresis machine is easy to use and has been proven to treat excessive sweating of the palms, feet and armpits. The Hidroxa goes up to 60v, meaning it’s one of the most powerful iontophoresis machines available today, offering a choice between constant or pulsed current. Initially, we recommend performing one treatment (a simple 20-minute session) every day or at least every other day for two-three weeks. Iontophoresis is not a permanent solution to hyperhidrosis; therefore, maintenance treatment will be required to remain effective.
The Hidroxa device is medically CE-marked. Unfortunately there are competitors on the market with devices that have not gone through rigorous safety protocols and lack CE-mark.
What are the main advantages of this method?
• The noticeable reduction of the excessive sweating and dryness that can last up to 4 weeks
• The efficiency of iontophoresis treatment for hyperhidrosis generally ranges between 85%-95% of people treated
• It is a non-invasive, needle-free, drug-free method
• The treatment itself is painless but a patient might experience a mild tingling sensation on the skin during the treatmentHow is the treatment performed in clinics?
The clinics do this in different ways. Some treat the patients at their clinic until the desired effect is achieved. Then the patients can borrow a machine or buy their own machine to continue with maintenance treatments at home. Others have chosen to take patients to the clinic and teach them the method and then they can continue on their own at home. Our customer service is there to support your staff as well as the patients to help them with the use of the method.
Most patients report a moderate to complete sweat reduction. This is usually achieved after 10-15 treatment sessions. Since iontophoresis is not a permanent solution, maintenance treatments are required. As nothing works 100% as with any medical procedure, results will vary from person to person. After an initial course in the clinic and determining an individual treatment regimen, many patients go for home treatment with their own machine for maintenance.

Providing Patients with an Effective Iontophoresis Solution: Our Partnership with Rikshospitalet Clinic in Oslo
In early 2018, Hidroxa was approached by a dermatologist from the Rikshospitalet clinic in Oslo, who was interested in providing iontophoresis treatment for their patients with hyperhidrosis and requested a demonstration of our machine.
We visited the hospital in Oslo and demonstrated the iontophoresis machine. They thought it was an excellent alternative to injection treatment due to the high cost and the resources needed to give repeated injections to patients at the clinic several times a year. In addition, iontophoresis is considered a favorable alternative to anticholinergic medication, such as Dridase, Oxybutynin, or Glycopyrrolate, as these pills can have varying levels of adverse side effects, including cognitive impairment, and may not be tolerated by all patients.
Soon after our meeting, the collaboration started. Initially, they started offering treatment only in the clinic. Still, they quickly switched to training the patient in one appointment with the nurse at the clinic and then allowing the patient to continue the treatment independently at home. Patients borrowed a machine through the medical aid center. If the patient was not satisfied with the outcome of the iontophoresis treatment, he could return the device to the hospital, and it would be available to another patient. For questions that arise, nurses and patients could turn directly to Hidroxa for advice, which also relieves the clinic. I also conduct training with the medical aid center staff on how the machine works and with healthcare personnel on medical questions that may arise during treatment.
Since 2018, more and more Norwegian hospitals have contacted us and started similar collaborations. This is a cost-effective solution for clinics due to the price and the fact that the method requires minimal time from hospital staff. The long distance to the nearest skin clinic is no longer a concern for patients who live further away, as the iontophoresis treatment can be performed by the patients themselves at home.
Note: The price is on request, excluding VAT and additional shipping costsRecommendations
